The Amgen Foundation is granting an additional $1 million to leading nonprofit, Khan Academy over the next two years to support science education around the world. Since 2015, the Amgen Foundation has committed more than $10 million to further Khan Academy's mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
This new grant from the Amgen Foundation will enable Khan Academy to:
A critical time for science education
The Amgen Foundation’s sixth grant to Khan Academy comes at a critical moment as their platform seeks to expand and enhance its free learning resources. Without important science skills, more than 75 percent of young adults in the U.S. leave high school unprepared for additional educational or economic opportunities in STEM. Furthermore, education stands to be upended with the broad access to generative AI tools coming into classrooms.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Amgen Foundation for their continued support and commitment to advancing science education,” said Sal Khan, founder and CEO of Khan Academy. “This grant allows us to take the next step in making high-quality science education accessible to students everywhere. By incorporating emerging technologies such as AI and virtual simulations, we can help students develop critical thinking skills, foster their curiosity, and better prepare them for STEM fields in the future.”
Accelerate learning opportunities
Amgen Foundation funding has helped develop more than 1,600 biology content assets since 2015 and forms part of Khan Academy’s strategic ambition to accelerate the STEM learning of four million students in STEM annually by 30% by the end of the 2028-29 school year, with a focus on learners in historically under-resourced communities.
Biology content benefitting millions
A total of 120 million yearly learners currently access Khan Academy, while the platform is used in 190 countries across 56 languages. In 2023, the biology content on Khan Academy reached 11 million students and educators. Thanks to previous Amgen Foundation funding, Khan Academy is also reaching 35,000 teachers and students through Amgen Foundation sponsored school district partnerships with a strong focus on historically under-resourced school communities.
“Khan Academy’s free science courses are available to so many students around the world,” said Scott Heimlich, president of the Amgen Foundation. “We strongly believe that everyone needs science and science needs everyone. Our goal is to empower diverse thinkers to solve the world’s greatest challenges. Our partnership with Khan Academy plays a key role in delivering to that vision.”
